Wear Green Friday for Start With Hello!

This week, Hawthorne has been participating in the Start With Hello program, which is aimed at teaching students how to include others and to become more connected to one another. The 2nd-5th graders have had assemblies, a visit from the Minerva Park police and lots of other activities throughout the week. On Friday, students (and teachers and staff!) have been asked to wear green to school, one of the colors of Sandy Hook Elementary.

A few other reminders:

Invention Convention AND Trash to Fashion sign-ups are due on Friday! If you need a form, click the following links to download and print: Intent To Invent and Trash to Fashion Entry Form

Also, don’t forget the Scholastic Book Fair starts next Tuesday. Students are bringing home information about this. And more volunteers are always welcome! Add your name to the spreadsheet here if you can help

And our next Kids Invite Someone Special is next Thursday (the book fair will be going on then too!). Forms have gone home, and can be completed online as well (but please don’t complete both!): https://www.hawthorneschool.org/rsvp-for-k-i-s-s/

Our Volunteer Challenge kicks off on Wednesday! Come out to our PTO meeting at 7pm that day! Or participate in one or two of the many activities we have coming up! Reply to this email if you’d like to participate or know more!

On Friday, February 10, most classes are having Valentine’s Day parties (check with the teacher or room parent for details!) AND two things are due! Participation forms for the Cultural Festival (download here) and GEM nomination forms (see this link).

And REMEMBER to #startwithasmile: Valentine’s Day is a week away! When you are shopping at Amazon, please make sure you start with a Smile! Follow this link to choose to support Hawthorne when you shop at Amazon. It’s that easy!

Hawthorne PTO News 1/29/17

It’s a super busy -and super fun- time of year at Hawthorne! Check out everything we have going on!

Volunteer Challenge: Did you know you can have an influence on your student’s school? Does your student enjoy field trips? Field Day? Participate in student groups? Enjoy the Holiday Shoppe? Scholastic Book Fair? The Parent Teacher Organization is made up of parents and school staff and teachers that work together to organize as well as raise funds to support many of these activities and to purchase needed items (including supplies for the playground, school office, classrooms and much more). And we really need YOU to keep it going! To inspire you, we are having a 2-hour Volunteer Challenge that will reward you with valuable experience helping the school and gives your student’s classroom the chance to earn a prize! It kicks off with our next PTO meeting on February 8 at 7pm and there are many other ways to participate-see the flyer here and step up to have an influence on Hawthorne!

Scholastic Book Fair: Our Scholastic Book Fair is coming up starting Feb. 21! It’s so much fun to help students shop for and purchase new reading material. Please consider signing up for a shift by clicking here or emailing amtward@gmail.com. BONUS: Helping here also counts toward the Volunteer Challenge!

KISS: Our next Kids Invite Someone Special is Feb 23 at 8am (the book fair will be going then too!). Stay tuned for sign-up information. BONUS: Helping here also counts toward the Volunteer Challenge!

Cultural Festival: Hawthorne will be having its first ever Cultural Festival on March 22. We have so many cultures represented at our school and need a lot of our families to share theirs! See more and sign up to participate with this form you can download here. BONUS: Helping here also counts toward the Volunteer Challenge!

Nominate a GEM!: Each school has amazing teachers, staff and volunteers. Do you know one at Hawthorne who has gone above and beyond? Please consider nominating them for the Great Educator Mentor award. Nomination instructions are at this link. Nominations are due February 10.

Trash to Fashion: Can your student take materials that might be trash and turn them into something wearable? Then they can enter this competition! This year additional points will be given for incorporating a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) component. Find out more and the find sign up forms here.

Invention Convention: This is a great opportunity for students to think about everyday problems and develop new solutions. More information coming soon!

Last Chance to be in the Directory!

Our school directory will be completed and distributed soon after we return to school! This will be a little booklet that will have class lists, school information, calendar and contact information for families that have provided it. We want to make sure everyone who wants to be is included. If you have not, please fill out the form at the link or email hawthorneparents@gmail.com with the parent/guardian names and contact info as well as student names, grade and teacher.

On another note, a big thank you goes out to Melissa Christian for running our holiday shoppe last week! And thanks to all the amazing volunteers! And to everyone who shopped – the kids loved it and we hope you get some nice presents!

Once again, the PTO would like to wish you happy holidays and a wonderful time with family and friends!

Are You Still Holiday Shopping?

Do you still have some Amazon shopping to do before the holidays? Please remember to #StartWithaSmile at smile.amazon.com/ch/31-1134585 and Amazon donates to the Hawthorne PTO!

We would like to thank everyone who has supported us this year through our fundraising activities or by volunteering! By participating in our fall fundraiser, going to Skatezone, shopping at Five Below or at Amazon and Kroger, as well as our book fairs and holiday shop (or by giving your time to these activities!), you are helping the PTO to be able to continue supporting school activities like field trips, field day, and student groups and many other activities. THANK YOU and have a great holiday season!

Spirit Day and Five Below Fundraiser

We hope everyone who ordered is enjoying their new spirit wear! We have set Friday, December 2 as a day to wear your school spirit gear if you have it. And if you did not order yet, you can still do so online at http://mannestores.com/hawthorne. Please note you can select store pick up to avoid shipping costs!

The weekend of December 2-4 we will be doing a fundraiser with Five Below. Bring in the flyer, which will be distributed at school, and do some holiday shopping while also supporting your school! You can also download the flyer by clicking here

Also, as we complete our school directory, please let us know if you have a business you would like to advertise. Gain exposure and help us offset the printing costs!

And one final but important note, please remember to #StartWithaSmile at smile.amazon.com/ch/31-1134585 as you do your holiday shopping and Amazon donates to the Hawthorne PTO! Thanks for your support and have a great Thanksgiving!

Holiday Helpers Needed!

Hi – we’ve added a number of people to the email list who signed up with the directory forms. If you do not wish to receive emails from the PTO, just click unsubscribe at the bottom of the email. The directory is still in progress and hopefully will be out before the holidays. If you have not completed the form and wish to be included, please do so here: https://goo.gl/forms/bnPZMDmXJGYPsZmR2

Our Holiday Shop will run from 9:30am-3pm, Mon-Thu, Dec. 12-15th. This is a super fun opportunity for the kids to do a little gift giving on their own. You have the option to send in money for them to spend at the onsite store hosted by Hawthorne PTO. But as with any store, it will need workers, so if you have some time to volunteer your skills, please contact Melissa Christian at melron424@yahoo.com.

Also, a flyer will be going home about a text alert program the Minerva Park Police are participating in. You can see the flyer and read about it by clicking here
